Papworth Hospital is the UK’s largest specialist cardiothoracic hospital. Papworth Hospital’s radiology service has a key role in the diagnosis of all cardiothoracic conditions. The service uses state-of-the-art imaging technology and facilities include a CT and MRI scanner. The Radiology Department images over 50,000 patients each year.

The magnet in the MRI scanner at Papworth is cooled with liquid helium. As helium turns to gas and expands rapidly at temperatures above -260° C the system requires a safety valve and quench pipe to ensure that in the unlikely event of the helium turning to gas it will be safely dispersed outside the building.

Medical Gases engineered and installed a quench pipe, designed to withstand extreme cold, to provide this safety measure.

New Pembury Hospital

Pembury Hospital is a new 512 Bedroom Hospital.  It is the first hospital in the UK to boast 100% single-room occupancy, to help reduce the risk of infection (particularly MRSA and C.difficile).  The Hospital also consists of an A&E Department, Maternity Unit, Outpatients and Diagnostic Department.

Medical Gases designed and installed the complete medical gas systems comprising of oxygen, nitrous oxide, medical air, surgical air, medical vacuum, and anaesthetic gas scavenging systems.

Medical Gases is proud to have been awarded a contract worth over £2m for the installation of the laboratory gas systems at The Francis Crick Institute in London. The scope of work includes the installation of more than 15000m of high purity distribution pipework and 125 cylinder gas manifold stations to over 1000 terminal units. The Institute is scheduled to open in 2015. When it is fully operational it will house some 1500 staff, making it one of Europe’s largest centres of biomedical research and innovation.
